Mastering Preflop Play: The Foundation of Texas Hold'em
Preflop is where most poker hands are won or lost before the flop even falls. A solid preflop strategy creates the foundation for profitable postflop play.
Position Is Everything
The most important concept in preflop play is position. Acting last throughout the hand (being "in position") is a massive advantage. Your opening ranges should be significantly wider from late position and much tighter from early position.
- UTG (9-handed): ~14% of hands
- Cutoff: ~25% of hands
- Button: ~45% of hands
- Small Blind: ~40% of hands (but out of position postflop)
Open Raise Sizing
In modern poker, standard open raises are typically 2x–3x the big blind. The key is consistency — don't vary your sizing based on hand strength, as this leaks information.
Responding to 3-Bets
When an opponent re-raises your open, you face three options: fold, call, or 4-bet. Your response should depend on your position relative to the 3-bettor, their frequency and sizing, and stack depths.
Starting Hand Selection
- Always raise strong hands — never limp with premium holdings
- Avoid calling single raises out of position with mediocre hands
- Suited hands have more value than offsuit equivalents
Consistent preflop fundamentals will eliminate costly leaks and set you up for cleaner, more profitable postflop decisions.
